Why Circle Systems for small animals?

AAS developed the Darvall Smooth Wall Tubing (SWT) circuits to suit a wide range of small animals (from 3kg bodyweight- see table) as part of our ongoing R&D effort to address the problems of hypothermia in anaesthesia. Circle systems retain heat and some humidification partly because the reaction between CO2 and absorbent is exothermic. Low volume, smaller diameter tubes with less resistance than traditional corrugated tubing used with low volume absorbers allow dogs & cats as small as 3kg to use circle systems. SWT benefits include less resistance to breathing, warmer patients and lower fresh gas flows. This reduces anaesthetic agent consumption and produces less waste anaesthetic gas (WAG). WAG is a known pollutant and has OH&S implications. Atmospheric anaesthetic vapour also takes up to 30 years to be broken down so it also contributes to ozone depletion!
